This Month’s Hottest Hotels

Hanazono, Japan

On the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, about two hours from the city of Sapporo, the Niseko ski area regularly sees a whopping 50 feet of powder per season, ranking it among the snowiest ski regions on the planet. Opened this June, the intimate Zaborin ryokan is a Zenlike crash pad, complete with traditional tatami mats and minimalist decor. Appropriately, the property takes its name from the Japanese characters for “to sit and forget” and “a small forest.” The hotel, perched in a private wood, features 15 villas, each with its own indoor and outdoor baths fed with mineral-rich waters from a nearby onsen (hot spring), making it the perfect spot for an après-ski soak.
