Q: I fly quite a bit on United and always read the “Ask the Pilot,” but which routes do you fly? Is there an actual real Captain Mike Bowers?
A: Yes, and I’m United’s Newark chief pilot. After more than 40 years of flying, I’ll be retiring at the end of the summer. After earning my pilot’s license in college in 1973, I flew the F-14 Tomcat from aircraft carriers in the Navy for nine years. I retired after 26 years with the rank of Captain. I’m a graduate of the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN). As a commercial pilot (for People Express, Continental and United), I’ve flown the Boeing 727, 737, 757, 767 and 777. In retirement, I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family, especially my seven grandchildren, and playing golf, running, biking, swimming and kayaking. Those are the things I enjoy but have not had the time to do as much as I would like.
