Our professional people are the heart of our airline, and I believe we have the best employees in the business. They are committed to working together to support our operation and to support you, our customer. Just like our employees have your back, they have each other’s, too.
Through a program called United We Care, the company provides confidential, timely, short-term crisis relief to those in the United family needing basic assistance unavailable through other resources. The range of assistance the program provides includes helping to pay an employee’s mortgage when she was diagnosed with cancer, natural disaster recovery and helping an employee rebuild after a house fire. United We Care is funded primarily by United employees to assist their co-workers in times of need.
Employees donate directly to the fund and also hold fundraisers like golf and fishing tournaments, bake sales and silent auctions throughout the year. The program is also supported by employee volunteers who review grant applications and discuss policy, procedures and the financial status of the program, in addition to their day jobs at United. Our customers have also provided generous donations to United We Care through fundraiser events that they organize with our Customer Experience and operational divisions, which will help us continue to provide crisis relief to those in the United family.
As an example of what our employees and customers are capable of, following the devastating effects of Superstorm Sandy in 2012, United We Care awarded more than $500,000 in emergency funds to more than 1,400 Superstorm Sandy victims. More recently, when Hurricane Odile hit San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, in September 2014, many of our 32 employees there were left without communications, power, food, water and even their homes. In addition to sending rescue flights to return stranded customers home to the United States, our emergency response team worked with the United We Care team to send supplies, including generators, food, water and financial support for our employees at the station.
Efforts like these often require quick coordination from our employees and our many business partners. I am honored and proud to experience what compassionate, caring people fly and work for United.
