A signal event

Shedding light on the second most important centennial this month

August marks the centenary of the onset of World War I. It is also the 100th anniversary of the installation of America’s first traffic light, in Cleveland, Ohio. While this event didn’t have quite the same impact as the Great War, it did inspire British popsters The Ting Tings to sing: “Don’t you be a traffic light/Don’t you be a traffic light/With all things said you turn to red/Don’t you be a traffic light.” Here, a few other signal-related highlights.
