Ready for red

If you’re headed to France this month, be sure to bring a corkscrew, because the third Thursday of November is Beaujolais Nouveau Day, when, under French law, the year’s new Beaujolais Nouveaus are released at 12:01 a.m., just weeks after the Gamay grapes that go into this highly drinkable varietal have been harvested. The wine originated roughly a century ago, as an inexpensive way for locals of the Beaujolais region to celebrate the end of harvest season. Today, oenophiles across France use it as an opportunity to celebrate the first wine of the season with sidewalk parties and picnics. If you plan to attend, you’ll need more than just that corkscrew: You’ll want to make sure you have the right clothes and accessories, too.
