Wear In … New York

Photography Sam Polcer

Principal Dancer, New York City Ballet
Lincoln Center Plaza

“Growing up, movies formed my idea of New York—The Goodbye Girl, The French Connection, things I still love watching. And then to arrive here as a young dancer and actually stand in places I’d seen onscreen was so exciting!”

“If ever I’m near a vintage or consignment shop, I definitely go in—that’s where I discovered this coat—but I never know exactly what I’m going to love until I see it.”

“My very first debut project, Restless Creature, features duets by four amazing young choreographers who actually perform with me. That’s kind of new, for a ballerina to dance with the contemporary choreographers themselves.”

“I’ve worn a few fancy gowns. I usually wear Bibhu Mohapatra—he’s a friend, and he loves to dress us dancers up. And I wore a beautiful Stella McCartney dress when she designed costumes for us once.”

“These are all my favorite colors I’m wearing: grays and greens. The pants are Daryl K, the coat is Chloé and underneath is a Rozae Nichols top. I like things that are quirky and unusual, paired with something simple with a great cut.”

Interesting aspect of Wendy Whelan’s personality. I know she is a great dancer with an interesting face and amazingly sculpted limbs, but I had no idea she is also stylish dresser outside the ballet. I love her coat, shoes, style. I want to read more about her, one of the best dancers of all time! I adore her.
